THE LIVE
THE MATCH
Inter don’t shine but they do their part, beating Empoli and gaining three points which allow them to stay in the wake of Napoli, now at +3 but with one game more than the Nerazzurri. It all happened in the second half in the Sunday half-time match at San Siro, with Lautaro unlocking a match in which Inzaghi’s men (in the stands due to suspension and replaced on the bench by deputy Farris) were struggling to break down the wall of D’Aversa’s Tuscans. A champion’s strike from the Argentine captain at the start of the second half, however, allowed the Nerazzurri to open the first crack in Empoli with Dumfries and Thuram who then closed the match, punctuated by the goal of the former Esposito who gave just a few minutes of thrill to the Inter fans. In the cold of the Meazza, Inter immediately took control of the game, but found little space because Empoli defended with order and without worries. The Nerazzurri become dangerous from a standstill, with Lautaro who, following a free kick from the right by Dimarco, with an overhead kick finds a prompt response from Vasquez.
Then the protagonist is again Lautaro, who, following a deep throw from Asllani, hits the post with a quick turn with his right foot. However, these were the only two flashes for Inter in a first half that was bordering on sleepy, because the home team’s ball possession (although it reached peaks of over 70%, then closing the match at 68%) was too slow and with too many errors to create some danger for D’Aversa’s men, who resist. In the second half we travel on the same tracks, with Inter taking the lead but without being able to accelerate and Empoli defending in an orderly manner without suffering too much. It would take some magic to unlock the match and captain Lautaro Martinez catches it, who, left free from outside the area, finds a great right-footed shot that slips past Vazquez. Shortly after, the Argentine has the ball to double the lead, but from the edge he shoots too centrally, served by Taremi (another bad evening for the former Porto player). However, the Nerazzurri fell asleep and took a risk, with an error by Sommer which almost opened the way for Empoli. D’Aversa throws the former Esposito into the fray, while Farris responds with Thuram and Mkhitaryan. Dumfries has the ball to double the lead, taking advantage of a rebound to get in front of Vasquez but kicking at him on the way out.
However, it is only a matter of a few minutes, because the Dutchman with a great third half from a corner taken by Asllani finds his fourth goal since the beginning of 2025, this time managing to beat the Tuscan goalkeeper. It seems like the ball to close the match, but Esposito doesn’t agree: Henderson’s cross, fake stop on De Vrij with a right foot to beat Sommer to reopen the match, giving the last minutes of passion to the over 60 thousand at San Siro. But it’s only a few turns of the clock, because Inter takes advantage of an Empoli distraction with a quick counterattack: Arnautovic serves Thuram who, one-on-one with Vasquez, finds the goal to make it 3-1, the Frenchman’s thirteenth in Serie A (at -1 from top scorer Retegui). And the chase towards Napoli for Inzaghi’s men can continue.
