If the final episode 16 of season 7 ofOutlander, broadcast Saturday January 18 on Netflix, did not leave us with a huge cliffhanger, like the previous seasons, it still gave us a revelation that we did not expect. After reassuring us about the fate of Claire, who recovered from her injury thanks to the expert hands of Doctor Denzel Hunter, this end of the seasonOutlander reserved a tragic fate for young Jane Pocock. Imprisoned for the murder of Captain Harkness, the young girl opened her veins, without knowing that William and Jamie were coming to her rescue. She therefore left her little sister Fanny an orphan. But the child can count on the kindness of Claire and Jamie Fraser, who immediately decide to take her in. While Claire quickly becomes protective of the little girl, certain elements will trouble the heroine played by Caitriona Balfe. After discovering that the mother of the two sisters was called Faith, Claire hears Fanny sing the song she sang to her stillborn daughter, when she held her in her arms at the Hospital of the Angels in Paris . A modern song, that Fanny could not know. Faced with so many coincidences, not to mention the night vision she had of Master Raymond, Claire draws the conclusion that Faith may have survived.
Faith's death, one of the most moving moments ofOutlander
An idea that we absolutely did not expect and which took us aback. It is all the more surprising since the series had never given us the opportunity to question Faith's death. If we have a little trouble knowing what we really think about it, we will still try to put our ideas down on paper. As a reminder, in season 2 ofOutlanderwhile they are in Paris, Claire gives birth in tragic circumstances. While she tried to intervene in the duel between Jamie and Frank, Claire felt pain and was then taken to the Angels' Hospital. When he wakes up, Mother Hildegard tells him that the baby did not survive. Claire then holds her deceased daughter, Faith. She rocks her, sings her a song, refuses to leave her. Her friend Louise de Rohan eventually convinces her that it is time to say goodbye to Faith. One night, when Claire has a high fever, Master Raymond arrives and treats her. Mother Hildegard later tells Claire that, even though she had no right to do so, she baptized the baby and gave him a burial. Claire and Jamie later both visit their daughter's grave.
Outlander : these elements which could support the theory around Faith
Could Faith really have survived? And if so, how? Diana Gabaldon's books, including Outlander is adapted, don't really give any answers, not yet anyway. In the ninth volume of Diana Gabaldon's saga, Claire indeed thinks, as we see in the finale of season 7, that Faith survived and that she was the mother of Jane and Fanny. Claire asks Ian to check with the brothel. But the author does not give more answers, unless they are found in the last volume, which has not yet been published. However, other publications by Diana Gabaldon may provide some information. Master Raymond would indeed be a time traveler, he would also have the power to resurrect people. Could Master Raymond have resurrected Faith and hidden the truth from Claire, for some unknown reason? This theory seems plausible, if we refer to this night vision in the final episode, where he asks Claire for forgiveness.
In Diana Gabaldon's short story The Space BetweenMaster Raymond is looking for one of his missing daughters. Could it be Faith, if he had resurrected her and then raised her as his daughter? Especially since, as an Internet user on the Reddit forum points out, many time travelers in Outlander were not raised by their parents (a theory that is not true, if we take Jemmy and Mandy, Brianna and Roger's children). This could therefore support this thesis, assuming that Faith was also a time traveler.
-Outlander : why it seems unlikely that Faith survived
But how can we explain the body of the baby that Claire held in her arms? This would mean that Mother Hildegard would have been his accomplice, which seems unlikely given the personality of this character. It seems unlikely that Faith actually survived. If Jane and Fanny were truly Faith's daughters, that would mean that William would have slept with his niece. It's hard to believe that the screenwriters ofOutlander are venturing in this direction! However, this would explain the disturbing resemblance, which is seen even more at the beginning of episode 16, when we see Jane in close-up facing the journalist, between the actress Silvia Presente, chosen to play this character, and Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna. If this resemblance was perhaps not obvious until now, it is more obvious in this finale. Unless it's a trick of our imagination, in the light of what we learned about Jane's mother? Because, if Faith had lived, being Brianna's sister, we can assume that she would have had the same flamboyant hair as the latter, as we see in the small portrait of Fanny's mother, in the medallion.
Outlander : why reviving Faith is a bad idea
Diana Gabaldon readers have already speculated about this on the Reddit forum, well before the release of season 7 ofOutlander. And the theory that Faith lived isn't really to their liking. “If she miraculously made him live, just to have such a tragic life, it would be too much for me”wrote a user, reflecting the opinions of many fans, and ours. To imagine that Faith really survived, but died before meeting her parents, is a bit too much. Like thinking that Claire and Jamie were very close to their little daughter Jane, but that Jamie arrived too late to save her!
Of all the troubling elements noted by Claire, it is especially the song that poses a problem. How could Fanny have known this modern song? But how could Faith have remembered it, when Claire just sang to her when she was born? Unless Faith, Fanny and Jane's mother, was also a time traveler? Or maybe Claire feels this way because her maternal instinct was awakened by this orphaned little girl and the fact of having come close to death awakened many emotions in her. With Outlander, you should never say never, this remains a series which talks about time travel and which therefore contains a lot of supernatural elements. We will therefore have to wait for the season 8 finale ofOutlander, and the final volume by Diana Gabaldon, to get to the bottom of it. And you, what do you think of this plot?
