Nigeria international Ademola Lookman was on target but could not prevent his side from going down 3-2 against Napoli in a Serie A fixture at Gewiss Stadium on Saturday.

Atalanta were the better side in the opening exchanges and it was Mateo Rategui, who put them ahead in the 16th minute after powering home from close range. However, Napoli grew confidence into the game and they levelled matters in the 27th minute courtesy of Matteo Politano.

Former Manchester United player Scott McTominay doubled Napoli’s lead in the 40th minute for a 2-1 lead at the half-time break. Fresh from scooping the December Goal of the Month award, the Super Eagles forward put Atalanta level in the 55th minute.

However, former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku powered home in the 78th minute to make sure Napoli took home maximum points. The win saw Napoli open a six point lead at the top of the table with 50 points, while second-placed Inter have 44 points.

Meanwhile, Atalanta remained third on 43 points amassed from 13 wins, four draws and four defeats. Lookman has now scored 10 league goals from 18 appearances so far this season. The Super Eagles attacker has further chipped in five assists.
