After Borussia Mönchengladbach’s top game defeat, top striker Tim Kleindienst (29) is furious. At the center of his frustration: the referee!
After three defeats at the start of the new year, tempers at Borussia Mönchengladbach are more tense, even if there was no alarm yet.
Gladbach: Tim Kleindienst finds clear words for the performance of referee Harm Osmers
But after the 3-1 defeat in the top game against Bayer Leverkusen, the Gladbachers noticed that the great spirit of optimism with which they went into the winter break had evaporated.
After the defeats against Bayern Munich (0:1) and VfL Wolfsburg (1:5), there was the third defeat in seven days against the Werkself on Saturday evening (January 18, 2025).
Harm Osmers (39) in particular felt the pent-up frustration. After an unfortunate handball by Fohlen captain Julian Weigl, the referee decided on a penalty after a brief deliberation, which Bayer star Florian Wirtz (21) safely converted. A decision that was sharply criticized by Gladbach legend Lothar Matthäus (63) during the game.
Always referee trouble! Even at Borussia there wasn’t much understanding of the penalty whistle. “The handball, you have to explain it to me. “We didn’t get situations like the one in Dortmund,” said sports director Roland Virkus (58), annoyed at the whistle.
Storm star Tim Kleindienst, who was available again in the top game after recovering from a gastrointestinal illness and also scored himself, had even clearer words for referee Osmers after the game.
-“When I first noticed it, I thought it was a short distance and a sharp ball, where you hardly have any reaction time,” said the 29-year-old.
And he goes even further: “It’s just annoying. These are the kinds of scenes where you drive home and think shit again, you try to get into the game better, then you concede 0-2 and the thing then goes to Leverkusen.”
Referee Osmers didn’t do a good job for the DFB international that Saturday evening. Kleindienst wants to have said this clearly to the referee.
“I then told the referee that there were two such actions outside the box in the first half, but then everything was waved through, even though good situations could have arisen,” said the former Heidenheimer angrily and looks for his team apparently a certain disadvantage.
On the Gladbach side, unfortunate whistles from the referees have recently increased. The penalty given for the decisive goal against Bayern Munich caused frustration. There were two controversial scenes against Borussia Dortmund, for which the Foals were not awarded a penalty. Kleindienst probably has fond memories of all of these situations and is one of the reasons for his frustration.
