Bayer star Wirtz reveals after victory: “I enjoy playing against Gladbach”

Next defeat for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga! The Foals started the first half of the season on Saturday evening (January 18, 2025) with a 3-1 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz (21) with a brace (32nd and 62nd minute/FE) and Patrik Schick (28) with his twelfth goal of the season (74th) scored the goals for the Werkself. Shortly before the end, clipper Tim Kleindienst (29) scored the consolation goal for the Foals (90th).

Borussia Mönchengladbach: The votes for the game against Leverkusen

After the difficult opening week with the games against Bayern (0:1), in Wolfsburg (1:5) and now Leverkusen, Borussia will continue with a supposedly more manageable task next Saturday evening (January 25th, 6:30 p.m.). Then VfL Bochum will be visiting Borussia Park for the next top game.

We collected the voices and reactions of the players and those responsible after Borussia Mönchengladbach’s game in the Bundesliga at Bayer Leverkusen.

Gladbach professional Robin Hack (26): “That’s part of football. It was a week with three defeats, which of course hurts. And we have to digest that for a day or two. And then we try to recharge our batteries. We are mentally stable. We have to make sure we get points again in the next games.”

Gladbach goalscorer Tim Kleindienst (29): “We started playing offensive football way too late. This is partly due to the fact that Leverkusen no longer played with the highest pressure. They also had some shooting errors, we were able to win balls and had the ball significantly more. Of course it plays better then. We have to manage to get better in these possession phases even against the big teams and to get out of pressing situations.”

Gladbach-Trainer Gerardo Seoane (46): “It’s no secret that Leverkusen and FC Bayern are at the top of the Bundesliga. Ultimately, we saw that their individual quality is very high. Getting the 90+ minutes under control is difficult. We still controlled them well for a long time. Allowing nothing is not possible, but we have allowed little. Then we make mistakes ourselves, small details that make a difference against top teams. It was a bit unfortunate with the refereeing decisions that influenced the game.”

Gladbach captain Julian Weigl (29): “Leverkusen are extremely strong with the ball. They define themselves by that. We just tried to make the spaces tight. We were aware that we had to defend and endure a lot. It’s difficult to stay calm on the ball when you’re running behind for a long time. We succeeded at times in the second half, but overall too rarely.”

Gladbach-Sport boss Roland Virkus (58): “Every little mistake is punished against such a top team. We did two, the referee did one. At the moment all 50/50 situations are scored against us. But I don’t want to cry. Defensively it was a decent performance from the team. Moving forward, we simply have to be more courageous in one situation or another. It’s not a broken leg. We said the first three games would be difficult games. But it’s about the manner. It was fine against both teams, both of which are top teams.”

Bayer-Doppelpacker Florian Wirtz (21): “I actually like playing against Gladbach because they are a team that likes to play. I like my rooms there, today too. It took me a while to get to the balls. I tried to do something with the opportunities I had. I’m also happy with my scorers.”

Leverkusen-Trainer Xabi Alonso (43): “We did a lot of things well. We had already discussed that we would run down the time, end the game and not allow any more chances. That wasn’t good. I’m happy with the rest, I’m happy with the performance. It was a serious performance. Not really spectacular, but overall stable.”
