Frenchman Gael Monfils advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by edging out American Taylor Fritz, the No 4 seed, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4 at Melbourne Park on Saturday.
Monfils, ranked No 41, will play the winner of the match between American Ben Shelton, the No 21 seed, and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 16 seed, next.
The 38-year-old Frenchman beat No 30 seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-4) and German Daniel Altmaier (7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (3)) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, Fritz, ranked No 4, won against Jenson Brooksby (6-2, 6-0, 6-3) and Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin (6-2, 6-1, 6-0).
