From January 1, 2026, motorists will be required to equip themselves with a special rotating light to drive in Spain.
This equipment, used in distress situations, must replace the traditional emergency warning triangle.
A measure which will also concern certain French people. From January 2026, V-16 equipment will become mandatory for all drivers traveling in Spain, including those coming from abroad. “The V-16 is an accident warning device that replaces the classic triangles to indicate that the vehicle is stopped on the road or that its load has fallen on the road”indicates the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) on its website. It guarantees visibility in adverse conditions such as fog, rain or low light.
Concretely, “it is a small yellow beacon connected and capable of emitting high intensity light 360º intermittently or continuously for at least 30 minutes”. The device also has a geolocation system. When activated, “in addition to emitting the warning light signal, it connects to the DGT 3.0 platform to transmit its position in real time and warn other road users of the situation”specify the authorities. “We will be able to receive your location coordinates and this will help us protect you by informing other vehicles approaching the accident scene that there is a vehicle involved in an accident.”they detail. It remains to be seen whether other data is collected in parallel.
Increase driver safety
The idea behind the installation of this new equipment is to maximize the safety of road users. During a breakdown or accident, these markers do not require the driver to walk on the emergency lane to install them ahead of their vehicle, as is customary to do for triangle. This helps limit the risk of crushing. Motorists must place the rotating beacon on the highest possible part of the vehicle, where they are best seen. If it is impossible to reach the ceiling, “the V-16 device must be equipped with a means, such as a magnet, allowing it to be placed on the driver's door”specifies the DGT.

Note that these boxes were deployed in 2021. But, until next year, the warning triangles can still be used on Spanish roads. However, the General Traffic Directorate recommends purchasing these beacons from among those certified now (for an average price of around forty euros). After January 1, 2026, non-possession of an approved V-16 in your vehicle may result in financial sanctions, with fines ranging from 80 to 200 euros.
