American No. 2 Tommy Paul faces US Open 2015 finalist, Kei Nishikori in the second round. Both players had challenges in their respective first round matches, going the distance.

Paul has been one of the new young Americans charging up the rankings in the past six months and has been rewarded with good showings in Australia (semi-final 2023) and last year reaching the quarter-final at Wimbledon.

Nishikori had been away for consecutive nine grand slams before returning to play Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year but had to skip the US Open. His serve accuracy shows he can wind back the clock to the form that took him to a Slam final.

The second match between them will be entertaining matching Nishikori’s use of placement against a more aggressive ball-striker in Paul.

Prediction: Paul in five sets.

Paula Badosa [12] v Talia Gibson H2H & Match Fundamentals

With reaching the quarter-final at the US Open, and 26-11 win-loss record on hard courts in 2024, Paula Badosa’s comeback from a potential career-threatening injury continues. She was ruthless in converting her break point chances in the first round against Xinyu Wang and is the favourite against Aussie wildcard Talia Gibson.

Gibson had a breakthrough victory in the first round Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmezstretching the match to a decider.

The attacking play from Badosa and her unpredictability in the rallies will outshine Gibson’s game, coupled with the Spaniard’s strong serving.

Prediction: Badosa in straight sets

Jessica Pegula [6] v Elise Mertens H2H & Match Fundamentals

US Open finalist, Jessica Pegula faces World No. 34 Elise Mertens as she chases her first win against the Belgian. After having a vibrant season last year, Pegula will aim to better a disappointing second round exit from last year.

The Belgian No. one, Elise Mertens started the season reaching the final in Hobart and is also looking to put a disappointing 2023 behind her, after ranking outside top 30 for the first time after 2017.

Mertens double skills will be a match for Pegula, who will look to take returns early as she tries to dictate rallies.

Prediction: Pegula in three sets.
