In Glattbrugg, a truck overturned on the A51 motorway heading towards Zurich. He blocked both lanes, as pictures from a news scout show.
“The backlog on the highway was huge. The entrance to the motorway at the airport was closed,” reports the news scout.
The TCS traffic jam report showed that the A51 airport motorway was completely closed from the Werft exit to the Zurich-Nord junction.
This also had an impact on the other roads in the region: traffic was backed up on the opposite lane because one of two lanes there had to be closed as well. In addition, there was a traffic jam in both directions on the main Schaffhausen-Zurich road between the Kloten-Nord exit and Glattbrugg, with a loss of up to 30 minutes.
The Zurich cantonal police reported in the evening that it was an accident. At around 1.30 p.m., the truck driver (46) drove his concrete truck via the Glattbrugg entrance onto the airport motorway towards Zurich. At the end of the driveway, for reasons that are currently unclear, the truck tipped over on its side and slid onto the two lanes of the highway.
As a result, there was another collision involving a passenger car driver who drove into the tipped truck. All people involved remained uninjured.
Salvaging the truck was difficult. Before it could be erected, a construction company had to pump the concrete out of the mixer. After the two accident vehicles were removed, a specialist company cleaned the road of any leaked diesel.
The motorway had to be closed for several hours in the direction of Zurich. Due to spilled concrete, a lane in the opposite direction had to be closed and traffic had to be routed past the accident site in a single lane. The fire department set up a diversion.
