“A return from the East” announced, rain and snow hoped for in the Pyrénées-Orientales

Rain and even snow on the agenda for the next few days in the Pyrénées-Orientales? The hypothesis indeed seems more and more probable. According to the latest forecasts of Weather , an episode of precipitation is expected this Thursday, January 16. A disturbance coming from the sea, which could bring a lot of humidity to the driest department in France.

A “return from the East” in the Pyrénées-Orientales

Winter has set in over almost all of France this week, as evidenced by freezing temperatures who invaded the plains of France this Tuesday, January 14 in the early morning. In , the thermometer fell to -4.1°C last night, and down to -7.0°C in Torreilles and Vinça, the coldest night in more than six years in the Catalan country ( read opposite).

In the Pyrénées-Orientales, the cold should persist a good part of the week, first with clear weather, then with the return of the tramontana, this Wednesday, and finally with the arrival of a disturbance, Thursday January 16, as confirmed by the various weather models.

“A little rain expected this Thursday between the south of Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales returning from the East,” confirms his side Weather Languedoc Roussillon. Precipitation from the Mediterranean is expected to fall on the region.

Perpignan should avoid snow

It is still too early to determine the accumulations that will fall on the department. 10 to 20mm are however hoped for. The coastline, the plain then the interior will be the most affected sectors. On the temperature side, it will be cool, between 3°C and 7°C, this Thursdayenough to cause snow at medium altitude.

“It will snow in the mountains from 1000 meters. Despite cool temperatures on the ground (close to 0°C in the morning while remaining positive), the air will be too mild in the mid-levels to allow snow to reach the plains”specifies the specialized page, which excludes the possibility of snow in Perpignan and on the Roussillon plain.

An isothermal phenomenon could nevertheless occur and lower the rain-snow limit over the hours.

Very little rain for a month

If it materializes, the arrival of this disturbance is good news for the Pyrénées-Orientales, which still suffering from drought. Since the torrential rains at the end of October, the department has experienced very little precipitation. And the water tables are still at a worrying level.

Over the last thirty days, barely 13mm of precipitation was measured by the Perpignan-Rivesaltes reference weather station. Nicolas Garcia, vice-president of the Department and president of the Roussillon tablecloth union, calls on the population to “not to relax their efforts” on water saving.
