Cerúndolo, first Argentine victory in Melbourne

Sports editorial, Jan 14 (EFE).- Francisco Cerúndolo became the first Argentine to reach the second round of the Australian Open after beating Kazakh Alexander Bublik 7-6(1), 6-3 and 6-2.

It took the player from Buenos Aires one hour and 51 minutes to get through the first round of the event for the third year in a row. After the eliminations of Sebastián Báez and Mariano Navone, Ceúndolo survived at the start of the competition against an opponent he had never beaten and who could not enter the match.

After two years without passing the previous round, the Argentine has had two more years, the last two, with favorable starts. His peak is in 2023, when he reached the third round, where he lost against the Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime.

The one obtained against Bublik was the first victory of 2025 for the Argentine who previously played in the Auckland tournament but was eliminated in his debut by the Spanish Roberto Carballés.

Francisco Cerúndolo awaits a rival in the second round. It could be his compatriot Facundo Díaz Acosta if he beats the Belgian Zizou Bergs.
