The fierce fire that broke out around 5 p.m. at Sonna International on the Hoge Mauw industrial estate in Arendonk is under control, but has not yet been completely extinguished. Rob Blockx (Everybody 2370), mayor of Arendonk, reported this on Monday evening around 7 p.m. “The fire brigade remains on site en masse and allows the building to burn out in a controlled manner. There is no danger of spillover to other buildings.”
It is certain that the fire severely damaged the buildings of Sonna International. The company specializes in African textiles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. “The cause of the fire is not yet known,” says the mayor.
“When the fire started, two company employees were said to have been on site, but they were able to leave the building in time.”
Tons of cotton must have gone up in flames. The fire spread quickly and the flames rose meters high from the roof. There was also noticeable smoke development. The residents of Arendonk were advised to keep windows and doors closed.
Access to the industrial estate was closed so as not to hinder the fire brigade. Police urged people to avoid the area. Smoke is by definition unhealthy, but as far as we know no toxic substances have been released. Measuring teams were operational in the area.
