Former Zug Council of States and FDP President Rolf Schweiger is dead

The former FDP federal parliamentarian Rolf Schweiger has died at the age of 80.

«It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to lic. iur. Rolf Schweiger (1944–2025), former Councilor of States, former Cantonal Councilor and former President of the FDP Switzerland,” writes the FDP Zug on Instagram. The deceased leaves behind his wife and two sons.

Rolf Schweiger was an outstanding lawyer and a passionate fighter for liberal values ​​and Switzerland, the party continued. His “incomparable presence and commitment” would leave a mark “that extends far beyond his work.”

The lawyer with his own law firm in Zug was elected to the Zug Cantonal Council in 1970, where he served initially until 1974 and again from 1976 to 1994. From 1980 to 1994 he chaired the FDP parliamentary group.

From 1999, Schweiger sat on the Council of States for the canton of Zug. In April 2004 he took over the presidency of the FDP Switzerland, but had to resign in November due to burnout. Schweiger retired from politics in 2011. (dvm)
