He didn’t hesitate. Ter Stegen is honest about Szczęsny

On Sunday, FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-2 and won the Spanish Super Cup. This is the first title in the Hansi Flick era.

The injured captain of the Pride of Catalonia, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, arrived in Saudi Arabia with the team. The German goalkeeper is sidelined due to a serious knee injury he suffered in September. After the match against Real Madrid, he took part in the decoration ceremony and raised the cup.

– It’s an honor to lift the trophy, but I know the effort my teammates put in. Each of them deserved this title – he said in an interview with Movistar Plus television.

During the interview, Ter Stegen also referred to the situation of goalkeepers in Barcelona. In his absence, Inaki Pena took over, and on October 2, the club signed a contract with Wojciech Szczęsny, bringing him out of football retirement. The Pole waited for his debut until January 4, when he played in the 1/16 final of the King’s Cup against UD Barbastro. Then he was also in the starting lineup of the Pride of Catalonia for both matches of the Super Cup.

– The decisions are not up to me, but both Inaki Pena and Szczęsny are great goalkeepers, both of them are at a high level. The most important thing is that everyone has good relationships, including with Ander Astralaga (currently Barcelona’s third goalkeeper – editor’s note). There is a lot of respect between them. This is important because we have to work for the good of the team, said Ter Stegen.

Let us add that Wojciech Szczęsny cannot count his performance in the Super Cup final as a success. The 34-year-old was shown a red card in the 56th minute. The Pole was late in leaving the goal and fouled Kylian Mbappe in front of his own penalty area. After a VAR review, the referee sent him off the field.
