The first edition of El Clasico of the new year takes place on Sunday when Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the final of the Spanish Super Cup.
Both sides had fairly straightforward paths to the final, with Barcelona beating Athletic Club 2-0 on Wednesday and Real Madrid defeating Mallorca 3-0 on Thursday to clinch a spot in Sunday’s match. This meeting also marks the first time the pair will play each other since October’s Clasico, when Hansi Flick’s side won 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in a game that Los Blancos will be eager not to repeat.
Much like the last meeting was, though, Sunday’s game will be a showcase for whichever star-studded squad rises to the occasion. Reigning champions Real Madrid will have Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham – who scored against Mallorca – available, while the same is true at Barcelona with Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, a goalscorer against Athletic Club. Flick will also have the additional benefit of selecting Dani Olmo, who they were finally able to register after a weekslong saga.
Stick around for pre-game coverage and live updates once the game begins.
