Sports – Maurílio Silva, skipper of Desportivo Lunda Sul, debuts in CAF Confederation Cup

The Clube Desportivo da Lunda Sul makes its debut in the group stage of the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup, marking a historic moment for the Angolan club.

The Angolan team secured the third position in the Girabola in the 2023/2024 season, earning a place in the qualification rounds that grant access to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

In the two qualifying rounds, the Angolans eliminated Madagascar’s Elgeco Plus and South Africa’s Sekhukhune United.

Desportivo Lunda Sul has advanced to the group stage of the African competition for the first time, joining Group B alongside Moroccan side RS Berkane, Mali’s Stade Malien, and South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC.

Having played four matches, the Angolans currently sit in fourth place with one point, recording a draw against Stade Malien and suffering three defeats: 2-0 to RS Berkane, 1-0, and 2-0 against Stellenbosch FC in a double-header already played.

In the standings, RS Berkane leads with 12 points, followed by Stellenbosch FC with six, Stade Malien with four, and the Angolan team with one point.

This Sunday, January 12, Desportivo Lunda Sul will face RS Berkane at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, Angola’s capital, in a must-win match. A loss or draw would eliminate the Angolan club from the competition.

In an exclusive interview with RFI, Maurílio Silva, the Brazilian coach of Desportivo Lunda Sul, discussed his journey to the Angolan club and provided insights into the upcoming match against the Moroccan team and the games played so far.

Maurílio Silva, a 55-year-old Brazilian coach, previously played for Palmeiras in Brazil, Vitória Sport Clube in Portugal, Logroñés in Spain, and Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, among others.

He has won several titles, including the Brasileirão twice (1993, 1994) and the Saudi league once in 2003.

It is noteworthy that Maurílio Silva has been at the helm of Desportivo Lunda Sul for three consecutive seasons.

The Clube Desportivo da Lunda Sul has experienced rapid growth since its foundation in November 2020. In just four years, the Angolan team ascended to the top division and is now competing in African tournaments for the first time.

The 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup features three Portuguese-speaking teams: the Angolans of Desportivo Lunda Sul and Bravos do Maquis, and the Mozambican club Black Bulls.

In the French Ligue 1, Saint-Germain leads the table with 40 points, seven points ahead of , ten ahead of Monaco, and twelve ahead of , after 16 matches played.

This Friday, Matchday 17 kicks off with two fixtures: Lille traveling to and hosting Monaco.
