Thoroughbreds fall in road matchup against Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Skidmore College men’s basketball team rounded out the Capital Region weekend road trip with an 80-57 defeat against Union on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (4-8, 0-5 Liberty League) played competitively for a major portion of the match, including holding a six-point lead at the 16-minute mark of the second half, but an extensive late-game shot making display from the Garnet Chargers (6-7, 2-4 Liberty League) resulted in the lopsided final score.

“We would be 10-2 if our games were 20 minutes or one half long. Unfortunately, we have not learned how to play 40 minutes of basketball with the mental and physical toughness necessary to win games especially in conference play,” said head coach Joe Burke. “I will continue to say we are getting better but for us to start winning at the clip we need to; we need to get mentally and physically stronger.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Union started out the gates on the upper hand by taking a 22-14 lead at the 12:28 mark, although an early seven points from Skidmore’s sophomore Aidan Roy helped keep the deficit from getting out of control.
  • The Thoroughbreds closed out the half strong by outscoring the Garnet Chargers the rest of the half by a 20-11 margin as freshman Find Us Find led the way with seven points during the stretch.
  • Skidmore entered intermission holding onto a narrow 34-33 lead on the scoreboard.
  • The second half saw a strong Skidmore start as the Thoroughbreds slowly built up the lead before being capitalized by a Jack LaGarde dunk off the dish from fellow sophomore Hakeem Daphnis at the 16:00 mark, which gave the road team their largest lead of the game, 46-40.
  • The Garnet Chargers responded by flipping the game upside down with a staggering 40-11 scoring run the rest of the way as the home team shot 15-of-22 from the field (6-of-9 from three) in an impressive display of shot making efficiency.

STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS

  • Roy again starred with a team-high 15 points to go alongside nine rebounds and three assists.
  • Senior Alexei Downie hauled in a team-best ten rebounds to go with eight points and three blocks.
  • Sithole led the bench scoring with seven points in 11 minutes.
