What happened between Pablo Maffeo and Vinícius Jr. in the Spanish Super Cup?

The semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup, starring Real Madrid and Mallorca, became news due to a scandal involving Pablo Maffeo and Vinícius Jr., who almost came to blows in the locker room.

During the match, both players could be seen in moments of tension, protesting against the referee and colliding hand to hand. This is due, according to various media reports, to the fact that they are carrying on a conflict from several years ago, which is exposed when they are in the countryside.

The most recent episode of provocation, and which could have contributed to this scandal, is that Maffeo gave an interview to a podcast a few months ago in which he said that he is a boxing fan and that if Vinícius were his rival in a fight, “I would knock him out in ten seconds”.

However, just a few days before the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup, the Spanish-Argentine defender used his social networks to report that these statements were taken out of context and stated: “I do not have the slightest desire to generate an atmosphere of tension and enmity either towards Real Madrid or towards my professional colleague Vinícius Junior.”

Another reason for the footballers’ enmity is related to the fact that Mallorca fans have made racist comments against the forward several times, just when he was being chased by Maffeo on the field. This topic has been discussed with concern in LaLiga, after the arrival of the Carioca.

“You’re terrible, you’re going home”was one of the phrases that the Brazilian launched against his opponent on January 9, 2025, when they were playing in the final, and there is no doubt that the fight they have is great.

After this phrase, Carlo Ancelotti caught the attention of the winner of The Best of FIFA 2024 award and he responded: “What? What have I done? “I didn’t do anything”again receiving a warning from the coach to focus on the game.

At the end of the match played in Saudi Arabia, Mallorca and Real Madrid in general seemed uncomfortable and throwing words at each other. Ancelotti was clear when he said at a press conference that this “It was unnecessary.”

“They were angry about what had happened at the end of the game and that’s why I tried to calm Maffeo down. I’m not saying that they are to blame or that it was our team’s fault. I’m saying that it was unnecessary for both teams.”added the Italian.
