Before his meeting in Bercy on Thursday January 9 with the Minister of the Economy, Éric Lombard, and his Public Accounts counterpart, Amélie de Montchalin, the president of the Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel, expressed doubts at the microphone of BFMTV on the government’s desire to reverse the retirement age, set at 64 years.
This is one of the burning issues that threatens the government with new censorship by the National Assembly. While François Bayrou must present his general policy speech to deputies on Tuesday January 14, his government is working to obtain the support, or at least non-censorship, of part of the left. To do this, possible “compromise” on the subject of pensions, including the postponement of the legal retirement age to 64, are discussed.
Thursday January 9, the deputy of La France insoumise (LFI), Éric Coquerel, was received in Bercy by the Minister of the Economy, Éric Lombard, and the Minister responsible for Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin, in his capacity as president of the Finance Committee. Questioned by BFMTV a few moments before his interview, Éric Coquerel pointed out the “fool’s game“played by the executive believing that it was not necessary”take bladders for lanterns“. “I don’t believe in illusions“, he insisted. “We’ll see what the Prime Minister says“during his general policy speech, but”I have big doubts about the idea that raising the retirement age to 64 could be called into question“, once again hammered the tenor of LFI.
“I have not heard of suspension, much less of repeal”
While several voices from La France insoumise, including those of Manuel Bompard and Mathilde Panot, threaten the Bayrou government with automatic censorship after its general policy speech, Éric Coquerel went in this direction, rejecting the idea that the government “might not be censored because the budget […] would be a little better“than the one presented by Michel Barnier.”I haven’t heard of suspension, let alone repeal“, he also commented after his meeting in Bercy, on the subject of pension reform.
