On Wednesday evening, shortly after 8 p.m., security forces closed a section of the A1 between Winterthur-Töss and Ohringen for several hours. Auwiesenstrasse in the area of the bridge was also cordoned off.

According to the police, the reason for this was a mentally disturbed man who climbed over the railing of the Auwiesen motorway overpass. He put himself and other road users in danger, according to a statement from the cantonal police.

Rescue workers from the Zurich Cantonal Police, the Winterthur City Police and the Winterthur Protection and Intervention Police were on duty. They made contact with the man on the bridge. Two jumping pads that the fire department had set up on the highway under the bridge were also used. These were intended to secure the man, as the cantonal police said when asked.

“With the support of specialists from the Zurich Cantonal Police negotiating group, the person was persuaded to go back to safety on the other side of the railing after around four hours,” the authorities write. The man was then looked after professionally. The roads were reopened shortly after midnight.
