Nuisance due to the snow: Ter Kamerenbos closed, flights delayed

The de la Cambre will remain closed for the time being due to the risk of falling branches due to the persistent snowfall. This happened on the orders of the police of the Brussels Capital Ixelles zone. Motorists are being diverted for the time being and pedestrians and cyclists are also not allowed to enter the park.

The situation will be monitored during the day and the risk has passed, the forest will be declared accessible again. It is not known for the time being what time that will be.

Delayed flights

Last night’s snowfall has major consequences for Brussels Airport. There, the aircraft must first be cleared of ice, a necessary procedure that takes at least twenty minutes per aircraft. In addition, the runways are cleared of snow if necessary.

The departure board at Brussels Airport shows canceled flights to destinations such as Milan, Warsaw and Venice. These are preventive cancellations to prevent further delays.

The airport spokeswoman advises passengers to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport and to depart well in advance.

According to the weather forecasts, it may continue to snow until around 11am. The greatest impact on flight operations is therefore expected in the morning.

Few problems on the road

It is remarkably quiet on the roads of Brussels. “Many people have decided to work from home,” says spokeswoman Inge Paemen. “It remains a difficult situation on the track. We therefore advise you to keep your distance and reduce speed. We also ask not to drive too close behind the gritters.”

The gritters spread until the early morning on Wednesday evening. At 3 a.m. they were still busy clearing roads and cycle paths of snow. The gritters continued their work on Thursday morning.

Number of buses delayed

At STIB, there were some delays on bus lines in Uccle, Watermaal-Bosvoorde and Oudergem on Thursday morning. Bus line 41 also currently does not run between Herrmann-Debroux and Transvaal.

“There are still some irregularities in the bus service,” spokesperson Laurent Vermeersch said. “This is because vehicles sometimes become blocked on slopes. Fortunately, staff are on the way and in most cases the problem is resolved quickly. The impact remains limited compared to other snow days.”

The Flemish public transport company De Lijn is not experiencing any significant problems, according to the Belga press agency.
