It always takes about 29 days from one full moon to the next. When the next full moon will be visible in the sky.

Frankfurt – If you look into the night sky, one thing can often be seen: the moon. Regardless of whether it is a full moon, a waxing or waning moon or a narrow crescent moon – its sight is often beautiful to see. The moon orbits the Earth and is illuminated by the sun – sometimes completely, sometimes only partially and sometimes not at all. The Earth’s satellite needs around 29.53 days for one lunar phase cycle.

A lunar cycle lasts about 29.53 days – then the next full moon appears in the sky

This cycle is divided into four parts, each lasting approximately a week. The new moon (or empty moon) is followed by the waxing moon, then the full moon. This is followed by the waning moon and then the new moon again. A complete cycle of these four phases is called lunation.

Except for February, a month lasts a little longer than a lunation – in most months, a full moon can only be seen in the sky once. If it happens that two full moons occur within one calendar month, the second moon is called the “blue moon”. However, this phenomenon will not exist in 2025.

Twelve full moons in 2025 – two are supermoons, two are mini-moons

There will only be twelve full moons in 2025 – but some of these full moons have something special in store. In March and September 2025, for example, a partial or total lunar eclipse will take place at the same time as the full moon, which can also be seen in Germany. The earth’s shadow passes over the full moon and covers part of it. In the event of a total lunar eclipse, the moon glows reddish – the so-called blood moon can be seen.

In April and May 2025, the full moon will be particularly small – a so-called mini-moon. The counterpart to this – the supermoon – can be admired in the sky in November and December 2025. The supermoon can appear larger and brighter than a “normal” full moon. But the phenomenon of the lunar illusion can also influence the apparent size of the full moon.

When the next new moon will be in the sky in 2025

The year 2025 will include not only twelve full moons, but also twelve new moons – days on which the moon is not illuminated by the sun at all and therefore cannot be seen in the sky, even though it is there.

This table reveals when the next new moon is approaching:

The next full moon isn’t just pretty to look at

The Moon is not only Earth’s reliable companion in the solar system, but is actually very important to Earth. Without it, for example, the climate on earth would not be as stable as it is and there would be no seasons. The research concludes that without the moon, which stabilizes the Earth, there might be no life. Nevertheless, it remains a mystery to this day how the moon actually came into being. A common theory is that it was formed when another planet collided with Earth. But a research team contradicted this theory. (tab)
