Algeria’s ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, thanked the outgoing members of the Security Council as president in January and welcomed the new arrivals.

The permanent representatives of the five new members gave a short speech before raising their national flags in front of the Security Council chamber.

The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members (the United Kingdom, China, , Russia and the United States) and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly. Five non-permanent members are replaced each year.
