In Montenegro, a man is actively sought by special forces. Aco Martinovic, 45, was identified as the main suspect in several shootings that occurred this Wednesday in the small town of Cetinje, the historic capital of the country.
Ten victims in total, including two children, were killed, while four other people were injured.
Montenegro's Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic said the suspect opened fire after a fight broke out in the bar where he was. Police say he shot the owner of the establishment, his children and even members of his own family.
The suspect is still on the run. “At the moment we are focusing on his arrest”declared the minister. Police dispatched special troops to search for the attacker in Cetinje, located about 30 kilometers northwest of the capital, Podgorica. All roads entering and leaving the city. Minister Saranovic warned that the suspect was extremely dangerous and urged Cetinje residents to stay at home until the attacker was arrested.
“The level of rage and brutality shows that sometimes these people (…) are even more dangerous than members of organized criminal gangs”said Danilo Saranovic. Authorities say the suspect had been at the bar all day with other guests when a fight broke out.
-Police Commissioner Lazar Scepanovic said the attacker went home and returned to the bar with a weapon. “He killed four people” at the bar, before leaving and then continued shooting at three other locations, Scepanovic said. “He attempted to kill four other people, then fled in the vehicle he was using, which we recovered.”
The suspect also appears to have had previous run-ins with the law. In 2005, he received a suspended sentence for violent behavior and appealed his latest conviction for illegal possession of a firearm. According to Montenegrin media, the attacker had built a reputation for violence and erratic behavior.
Wednesday's shooting was the second of its kind in Cetinje. In 2022, an attacker also killed 10 people, including two children, before being neutralized by a passerby. This small country, with a population of around 620,000, is known for its gun culture, with many people owning weapons.
Montenegro's President Jakov Milatovic said in a post on X that he was “shocked and stunned” by the tragedy. Prime Minister Milojko Spajic went to the hospital where the four injured were being treated to assess their situation. A three-day national mourning was declared.
