Notre-Dame de Paris fully protected. Three weeks after the reopening of the cathedral located on theCity Island (4th), the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, announced, Friday December 27, 2024, that the presbytery adjoining the building, built in 1866had recently joined the list of historical monuments.

The decisive restoration of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc

“At my initiative, the presbytery is now classified as a historic monument. The Parisian cathedral complex thus benefits from a consistent protection», indicated the mayor of the 7th arrondissement on the social network in April 2019.

Its presbytery, which houses the priest, was built in 1866, following the restoration undertaken by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc . The work lasted “more than 20 years”, specifies Rachida Dati. If the sacristy and the cathedral were quickly classified as historic monuments, the ecclesiastical dwelling, which belongs to the State, has long enjoyed relative anonymity linked to the absence of status.

But the resurgence of Notre Dame has accelerated this change. Especially since the attendance of the place does not dry up. According to the Diocese of Paris, reception capacities are full every day. Between 30,000 and 50,000 visitorsrushed into the building, 260,000 people in one week. Reservations are still in effect. But exceptions were made during Christmas celebrations.
