This Monday, Marie Barsacq was appointed Minister of Sports in the Bayrou government. The former member of the Organizing Committee for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games succeeds Gil Avérous and Amélie Oudéa-Castéra in these functions.
The Bayrou government is known. As promised, the Prime Minister communicated the names of his ministers before Christmas. After a very rich year 2024 and marked by the Olympic Games in Paris, the Ministry of Sports remains an entity in its own right and knows its new boss: Marie Barsacq. A lawyer by training and former member of the Paris 2024 COJO, the new minister also worked at the CNOSF and the French Football Federation.
Before her, Gil Avérous had held the post of Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Life for three months under the Barnier government. Previously Amélie Oudéa-Castéra had taken on this role for a little over two years and had notably contributed to the success of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A ministry in its own right
While some might have feared a downgrading of Sports, François Bayrou decided to keep a full-fledged Ministry of Sports. In 2020, the Ministry of Sports came under the supervision of that of National Education, thus relegating Roxana Maracineanu to the post of delegate minister.
Rumors in recent days surrounding François Bayrou's new government suggested that the new Prime Minister was going to appoint a Secretary of State responsible for Sports.
Beyond the budgetary aspect, the symbolic aspect is safe after this appointment of Marie Barsacq as new Minister of Sports while awaiting the first measures of the former member of Paris 2024. She will take on her new role on January 3 next.
