Attack on the Christmas market in Germany: “Not a coincidence”, “An Islamic attack”… Bardella's shortcut is controversial as the suspect defended far-right theses

Jordan Bardella's tweet on the Magdeburg drama caused a stir this Saturday.

Wanting to ride too quickly on the wave of emotion caused by the car-ramming attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg (Germany), Jordan Bardella took a shameful shortcut and was the subject of strong criticism this Saturday, following the events.

It was 8:17 p.m. this Friday when AFP published an urgent report in Germany about a car having hit visitors to a Christmas market. And the press agency specified that the incident had caused “deaths and injuries”.

Barely 1h30 later, Jordan Bardella had completed the investigation using the famous wet finger method and even though the facts were barely specified except that the alleged perpetrator, of Saudi origin, had just been arrested.

“The target of the attack owes nothing to chance”

And for Bardella, there could be no doubt about the suspect's modus operandi and country of origin: it was an “Islamic attack”. “The target of the attack owes nothing to chance: radical Islam is waging a war on our Christian traditions, on our identities, on our civilization,” added the far-right leader to his tweet, still online this Saturday early afternoon.

Condolences to the relatives of the victims, to the German people, after the Islamist attack which hit the Magdeburg Christmas market.

However, since then, the profile of the suspect has been greatly refined. Thus, Taleb A. is a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who arrived in Germany in 2006. He practiced in the region of Saxony-Anhalt, of which Magdeburg, 160 kilometers from Berlin, is the regional capital.

His motivations still remained unclear because he was not known to the police as an Islamist and, according to German media, he shared many of the views of the German extreme right. Opposed to the Saudi regime, he even published opinions on social networks denouncing the dangers of Islamization.

Not the “ideal” profile of the radicalized Islamist

Far from the “ideal” profile of the Islamist terrorist described by Jordan Bardella whose rapid reaction was controversial this Saturday. “Missed Jordan Bardella,” said Mélanie Vogel, an environmentalist senator, on X, who took up the information on the suspect’s profile. She concluded with: “In short, a terrorist from your ranks.”

LFI deputy Sébastien Delogu called Bardella a “guignol” and was scathing: “You make people laugh even when it's the far right that kills, there is only one word in your dirty mouth, it's 'Islam '…”

More softly, Olivier Faure, first secretary of the PS, invited the president of the National Rally to “turn his tongue in his mouth seven times before delivering his prejudices whose sole purpose is to cultivate anti-Muslim racism”.

On Friday evening, a car drove into the crowd “for at least 400 meters through the Christmas market” in the town of Magdeburg, 160 kilometers east of Berlin. Five people died (including children) in this attack which left at least 200 injured, around forty of them very seriously, according to a report drawn up this Saturday early in the afternoon.
