Manchester United have pulled no punches at Antony after Tottenham Hotspur raced into an early lead.
Spurs won a set-piece high in the Red Devils half as an unmarked Pedro Porro fizzed a shot that Altay Bayındır could only spill in the direction of an onrushing Dominic Solanke, who calmly slotted home. And as Spurs rose to the ascendancy, United fans all knew who to blame.
“Might as well play with 10 men, Antony looses the ball every time he touches it,” one fan scoffed. While a second said: “What’s Antony doing on that pitch? He has to be sold!”
“Antony has been so bad. He can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t body, he just can’t play Football,” a third fumed. And another added: “There’s just no threat here, Antony and Dalot as your wide players…”
Antony was given the nod by Ruben Amorim as Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were both snubbed again. The pair had been dropped for the Manchester derby over the weekend, with Rashford admitting that he wants a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford.
When questioned on why the England international wasn’t picked, Amorim stated that he was left out on selection grounds.
He said before the game: “Selection, I chose the players I feel are ready to cope with the demands of playing a strong game. I visualise all week and then chose my players, so just selection.
“Always the same with every player not just Marcus. I have to make a decision, so I did it. [On Garnacho] He’s good, one more option for the offence – he’s very fast.”
Garnacho was back on the bench for Thursday evening’s clash, but he could only watch on as Solanke broke the deadlock.
