CHRISTMAS is looking to be the calm after the storm this year as weekend weather looks to see some chaos.
Before we head into the week of Christmas, the weekend weather is set to bring low pressure and windy conditions.
Some parts of the country are being warned of wintry showers or hail, and possibly snow, in some areas.
Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly said: “Cooler air has arrived and biting windchill now. It will feel much fresher tomorrow, big coat time again.”
Experts have also warned that these stronger winds are likely to see weather warnings being issued to northern and western counties.
Antrim, Down and Derry are each already under a yellow weather warning due to “period of strong winds on Saturday is likely to lead to some transport disruption.”
This is set to be valid from Saturday at 7am until 9pm.
Donegal Weather Channel said: “An area of low pressure will pass to the north of Ireland and Scotland on Saturday and Sunday with very windy conditions.
“Some warnings for winds are likely to be issued for Northern & Western areas with strong northwesterly winds.
“Later Saturday and Sunday colder air will sink in allowing wintry showers or hail & Sleet with some snow possible on high ground areas.
“Stay turned for further updates and potentially weather warnings.”

As for today, Met Eireann has said the windier weather is upon us with the possibility of snow hitting some parts.
Met Eireann’s Brandon Creagh said: “It’s looking fairly breezy over the next few days, today is cold and bright with sunny spells and showers and a possibility of sleet on higher ground.
“Showers are to become more isolated by the end of the day, with highest temperatures of 5C to 8C.”
Tonight is looking to be another cold one with frost developing before rain reappears.
Brandon said: “Tonight is cold with frost possible in the east but turning cloudier from the west tonight with few showers turning to light rain.
“Staying mostly further east with temperatures generally ranging between 1C and 5C.”
WEEKEND RAIN & WIND
Friday will see that rain extend through the east with showers to ease off by evening time.
Weather boffins said: “Tomorrow has a band of rain pushing eastwards across the country in the morning hours, clearing to blustery conditions with sunshine and scattered showers following and becoming increasingly isolated by evening time.
“Maximum temperatures tomorrow generally ranging between 8C and 11C.”
The weekend itself will be sunny with some scattered showers, but hail may come along with them.
Brandon said: “Looking further ahead to the weekend, it looks windy overall with sunny spells and scattered showers with some of those showers hail, especially in parts of the northwest.”
WHITE CHRISTMAS?
It may not be a white Christmas this year as rain and drizzle are set to make another appearance.
While it will be a slightly damp few days, it will be mild with temperatures reaching the mid teens.
Brandon said: “Looking even further ahead to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, current indications suggest it will be mostly cloudy with some light rain and drizzle.
“That rain will be mostly frequent in the west and northwest, with driest conditions further east.
“Temperatures are looking set for around 10C to 15C for Christmas Eve and Christmas day and remaining mild overnight with no frost expected.”
