Three days after Cyclone Chido passed through the Mayotte archipelago, messages of support and solidarity are multiplying. Among them, we find an open letter from Albert of Monaco to the President of the Republic.
Last Saturday, December 14, Cyclone Chido hit the island of Mayotte, marking the most violent meteorological event recorded on the island in nearly 90 years. The scale of the destruction was unprecedented: roofs torn off, trees uprooted, massive flooding and power outages. From Sunday morning, December 15, the inhabitants of Mayotte discovered with horror the devastation left by this devastating cyclone. They quickly had to roll up their sleeves to try to save what could be saved. This December 16, Emmanuel Macron announced via a message on X that he would go to the archipelago. The President of the Republic also requested the establishment of a curfew on the island, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., which will be effective from this Tuesday evening.
Since the tragedy, many messages of support for the Mahorais have multiplied, including a message from Prince Albert of Monaco. On December 17, he published an official dispatch to Emmanuel Macron: “Mr President, it is with deep emotion that I learned of the terrible destruction caused by the passage of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte”, he begins. He continues: “Our thoughts are above all with the victims and the missing, as well as their loved ones. We also think of the injured, of all the people who lost their homes in this disaster, as well as of the courage of the rescue teams”. “Please be assured, Mr. President, of our complete solidarity and our unwavering support in these very difficult times”concludes the father of Jacques and Gabriella.

Cyclone Chido: A catastrophic outcome
To date, the latest report shows 21 dead, 45 seriously injured and 1,373 lightly injured, reports BFMTV. The Red Cross also indicates that “more than 200” of its members are missing. Yesterday evening, after a crisis meeting, Emmanuel Macron spoke about X. In his message, he wrote: “This evening, during the meeting of the interministerial crisis unit, I ensured that all emergency measures to come to the aid of the inhabitants of Mayotte were taken and that the continuity of the State could be assured”. He added that it was now crucial to “deal with emergencies and start preparing for the future”. “Faced with this tragedy which upsets each of us, I will declare national mourning”, he concluded.
Miss Mayotte, for her part, expressed on the microphone of BFMTV his deep sadness and his feeling of helplessness in the face of the devastation of his island.
