Its epicenter is located less than 30 km from the capital, Port Vila. In the streets of the island, many buildings are damaged and have collapsed several floors. A diplomatic building, which houses the embassies of France and the United States, also suffered significant damage.
Deaths have been reported in some areas of the island and residents are calling for help. “A lot of people are walking in the streets not knowing what to do. We need a lot of materials and we also need men. If you can please send us help to Vanuatu”asks a resident. The number of victims is not yet known in the archipelago, but some victims have gone to hospitals. Rescuers began searching the affected areas for survivors.
