The scoreboard for the 16th day

This championship weekend gave us many surprises, from the narrow draws of Milan and Juventus to the sensational defeat of Roma. Fiorentina also falls against an excellent Bologna, while Atalanta and Napoli smile. While waiting for tomorrow’s big match between Lazio and Inter, let’s give some numbers.

Carnesecchi 8: The first fact that catches the eye when talking about Atalanta at the moment is inevitably that of the ten consecutive victories in Serie A, peppered with twenty-eight goals scored. However, the imperviousness achieved by Gasperini’s men is going too unnoticed, having kept a clean sheet on five occasions in the streak of consecutive successes and having conceded only five goals. Numbers in clear contrast to the start of the season in which a decidedly excessive number of goals had been conceded. The credit undoubtedly goes to the entire defensive package, but Carnesecchi is giving a big hand (in every sense). Against Cagliari the goalkeeper born in 2000 stood out for a series of decisive interventions, which allowed Atalanta to achieve a success that was as difficult as it was important. In any case, Carnesecchi’s performance is continuing to grow, attracting a shower of well-deserved attention to the twenty-four year old.

Odgaard 7: Well, well done, three of a kind. With the decisive goal against Fiorentina the rossoblù striker scored his third goal in the league, surpassing the two totals of the entire last Serie A. Motta had started to include him, Italiano made him a starter. In this role of mobile support attacker he feels great, marrying perfectly with the characteristics of Castro and the other offensive interpreters. Without ever giving points of reference, he is able to finish from practically any position. This time he opted for a right foot tap-in, certainly not his favorite foot. Odgaard’s qualities had pushed Sassuolo to invest almost six million when he was nineteen. At twenty-five he seems to finally be ready to demonstrate what he had only briefly glimpsed in Holland.

Ranieri’s Roma 5.5: Rome, as we know, is a bipolar place, capable of going from exaltation to depression in the turn of the clock. In this sense the opinions of the last few days had been too optimistic. The two successes against Lecce and Braga were important, for goodness sake, but still insufficient to speak of a team on the upswing. In Como the step backwards was evident, especially in the second half. The balance of the six matches under Ranieri’s leadership now reads two wins, one draw and three defeats. Considering the reputation and quality of some of the opponents, we cannot speak of a disastrous path, but at least insufficient. At the moment the Giallorossi cannot therefore be defined as convalescent, but rather still ill.

Milan 5: The party for the club’s one hundred and twenty-five years began with applause for the many legends on the pitch before the match, but the tense atmosphere was felt right from the start. The climate of protest towards the club, the silently heavy absence of Maldini and the alternation of results were the real appetizer of the match against Genoa. To all this we must add Fonseca’s harsh words in recent days, the exclusion of Theo Hernandez and the ownership of the young Jimenez and Liberali. The result of all these components was a tense and imprecise performance, culminating in a disappointing 0-0 and an incessant barrage of boos. Moreover, in the last five in Serie A there has only been one victory and in three of the last four of the championship at San Siro the attack has remained dry. All data that certifies the need to find an antidote which at the moment, however, does not yet exist.
