Pickleball is the soft, easy to play, tennis alternative sweeping across the U.S. middle class. It is low impact, quick to pick up, and a lot less strenuous than real-life tennis. However, apparently, it still comes with risks, as Katie Couric shows off her head injury after a pickleball incident.
In a story posted to her Instagram, she displays her war wound. While playing pickleball, Katie Couric hit herself in the head, causing a rather nasty bruise. The swelling doesn’t look too bad, but it’s a warning for other pickleball players out there. The game may be slow, and the bats and balls light and floaty, but you can still do yourself a bit of damage with the wrong swing.
However, post pickleball injury, Couric posted another story, dressed up in a Christmas skirt, with the comment “ready to rock around the Christmas tree now.” It appears the bruise wasn’t fatal, and she’ll live to see another Christmas.
There are certainly many more dangerous sports to be playing than this one. But Couric just goes to show, if you’re clumsy enough, even pickleball can cause injury.
Pickleball, And Why Everyone Is Crazy About It
Across the U.S. more and more tennis courts are welcoming the new pickleball craze to their clubs. It has become widely popular among young and old, growing in popularity at an alarming rate. But what exactly is it about pickleball that gets people like Couric so hyped up that they end up with a head injury?
Well, it’s pretty simple. Unlike something like tennis or squash, it doesn’t need a high level of athleticism to play well. The slow-moving aerated ball is easy to chase down, and the short-handle paddles, or rackets, are easy to swing.
The sport is much more accessible to players, encouraging more to pick it up and play. The equipment is cheap, and it’s become very sociable. Pickleball is the perfect sport for older players, like Katie Couric, to pick up and stay fit. Without having the intense speed and impact of a game like tennis, the court is a place to play again.
