Former socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin recommended Monday to the PS, as well as to the ecologists and the communists to “remain in the opposition” but not to “put themselves in a situation of mechanical use of censorship” so that the Bayrou government is “tough”.
“The socialists, communists and ecologists, considering that they had not been called by the president to form the government, entered the opposition, they are in the opposition, they must remain there” , explained Lionel Jospin, whose speech is rare, on the air of France Inter.
But “at the same time, they must contribute to ensuring that this government, whose options they do not share, lasts,” he added.
To do this, he suggested to the non-LFI left not to move towards “too mechanical handling” of the threat of censorship in the event of François Bayrou's use of 49.3 which imposes a text on the Assembly without a vote.
Recalling not to be “a zealot” of this article of the Constitution, which he did not use during his five years at Matignon (1997-2002), Lionel Jospin recommended “flexibility” in the face of a “complex situation” .
He even argued that 49.3 could serve as a “protection for the opposition” by preventing it from becoming “co-author” of a text that it rejects and on which an agreement could not be found at the time. 'Assembly.
By abandoning this systematic threat, the left could, he hoped, “obtain” concessions from François Bayrou. He spoke of “sharing the effort” to reduce the debt, but also education or health.
And of course, he detailed, the question of the very controversial pension reform which delayed the retirement age to 64 years. “I hope that François Bayrou will have the wisdom (…) to put the work back into practice,” he said.
“But at the same time this government must last and the opposition must use the time that will come to work on its proposals itself and prepare for the change” in 2027, he insisted.
