The Dallas Cowboys live to fight another day. Mike McCarthy’s men won Sunday’s road trip to Carolina 30-14, saving themselves from elimination from the playoffs but sentencing the Panthers.
Carolina (3-11) become the ninth team who won’t be taking part in the postseason. It’s the sixth year running that the Panthers have failed to make it to the playoffs – their last appearance was in 2017 when they were dumped out at the Wild Card stage by the Saints.
As the 2024-25 NFL regular season nears its conclusion, the pressure is on for those who still hold ambitions of advancing to the playoffs while time is simply running out for some.
NFL standings: the current outlook
In the AFC Conferencethe Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs are safely through – the defending champions (13-1) are best placed to finish as No.1 seeds and get a bye in the Wild card round.
They could soon be joined by the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3), the Houston Texans (9-5) and the Baltimore Ravens (9-5).
In the National Conference, there is still a long way to go. Only two teams have clinched playoff berths – the Detroit Lions (12-1) and the Philadelphia Eagles (11-2). The Vikings, Packers and Commanders look headed to the postseason but may have to wait another week.
The teams eliminated from the NFL Playoffs
So far, nine teams have no chance of advancing to the playoffs this season:
From the American Conference: New England Patriots (3-10), Las Vegas Raiders (2-11), Cleveland Browns (3-11), New York Jets (4-10), Jacksonville Jaguars (3-11) and Tennessee Titans (3-11) have all been eliminated.
And from the National Football Conferencethe season is almost at an end for the Chicago Bears (4-9), Carolina Panthers (3-11) and New York Giants (2-12).
All will be revealed in the next three weeks of action, until the regular season reaches its conclusion in the first week of the New Year.
The 2024-25 NFL Wild card round will be played from Saturday January 11 2025 to Monday January 13 2025.
