The European year 2024 is over for Ajax. The team from Amsterdam lost for the second time in a row in the Europa League on Thursday and has lost its excellent starting position in the tournament after that defeat against Lazio. Time for an interim assessment based on VI’s report figures after Ajax’s European matches. We see many good grades and one failing grade.
With two games to go, Ajax’s place among the first 24 of the tournament is almost assured, and with a win over RFS and Galatasaray, Francesco Farioli’s team will join the first eight and thus skip the intermediate round. In short, there is no man overboard at Ajax, which had an excellent start to its European campaign. This is also evident from the figures.
Only players who have made at least three (assessed) performances are eligible for the interim report, so for example Steven Berghuis and Wout Weghorst do not fall by the wayside. Of the Ajax players who do receive a European Christmas report, Mika Godts is the student who can go to his parents with the most pride: the Belgian teenager leads the rankings with an average of 6.8.
This does not give Godts a large lead. After the matches against Besiktas, Slavia Prague, Qarabag, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Real Sociedad and Lazio, there are plenty of players who are close behind him. No fewer than eight players score between 6.4 and 6.7. Only one dissonance can be identified. Christian Rasmussen received an average of 5.3 and is therefore miles away at the bottom of Farioli’s class.
