‘The Ajax Supervisory Board wants to nominate former PvdA councilor Gehrels as the new Supervisory Board chairman’

The Supervisory Board of Ajax intends to nominate Carolien Gehrels (56) as the new chairman of the Supervisory Board. That reports The Telegraph Friday morning based on sources around the Supervisory Board and the board of directors of the Amsterdam club. This intention is expected to be announced at the General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM) on Monday morning.

Gehrels, who previously served as alderman in the municipality of Amsterdam for eight years, must succeed current Supervisory Board chairman Michael van Praag at Ajax. The honorary chairman will in any case remain in office until the Special General Meeting of Shareholders (EGM) that has yet to be determined. The Telegraph further.

According to the newspaper, it is not yet a done deal that Gehrels will actually become the new chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ajax. “The board of directors of the Ajax association, which is the major shareholder with 73 percent of the shares, will enter into discussions with Gehrels in the short term and has yet to give its blessing,” they said. The Telegraph.

The seven members of the board had a preference for Diederik Karsten, but Supervisory Board chairman Micheal van Praag and commissioner Leo van Wijk, who is also an honorary member, blocked the arrival of this Ziggo director.

The board of directors would now be open to a different chairman. ‘Provided that this would be sought in consultation with the new commissioners Hermine Voûte, Dirk Anbeek and Sirik Goeman – to be appointed on Monday. Those three are said to have been involved in the search.

Monday shareholders’ meeting at Ajax

The annual shareholders’ meeting will take place at Ajax next Monday. During this meeting, the annual report is reviewed by the directors. In addition, the shareholders’ meeting will focus on the three to be appointed Voûte, Anbeek and Goeman. They are the successors to three commissioners who are leaving: Leo van Wijk, Annette Mosman and Cees van Oevelen.

The two other commissioners, Van Praag and Georgette Schlick, will remain in office for the time being. It is true that they will leave as soon as successors have been found. With Gehrels, a successor to Van Praag now seems to have been found, although this is not yet completely final.
