Universal is bringing the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World Universe back to the big screen with Jurassic World Rebirth next year, a brand new movie that takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion. The goal? To strip the franchise back to its core elements, seemingly with a smaller scale adventure that returns the saga to its 1990s roots.
For that purpose, original Jurassic Park writer David Kopp is back to write the screenplay, and Koepp teases the vision for Jurassic World Rebirth in a chat with The Discourse Podcast.
Koepp details, “I hope people like the movie because the series tended to change after three, and it felt like, ‘Okay, so let’s change our tone.’ Steven [Spielberg] and I were interested in a tone that was maybe more akin to the very first movie. I saw it early on as a mission movie. I like things that are driven by bottles, by containment, you know?”
“And so, developing a limited team and a thing that they have to accomplish – that was all really fun,” Koepp continued. “And it was just fun to return to that world of great adventure backed by real science and write some cool new characters. You don’t often get a chance to have a blank slate and say, ‘What do you want to do?’”
He adds, “There were no franchise expectations other than dinosaurs.”
Koepp notes in the same chat with The Playlist’s podcast that Jurassic World Rebirth won’t be contradicting or denying anything from the previous six films. Good news if you hate retcons!
Universal will release Rebirth in theaters on July 2, 2025. This time around, franchise newcomer Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, The Creator) is seated in the director’s chair.
Here’s the full official plot synopsis: “The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”
Academy Award® nominee Scarlett Johansson stars.
