Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the part of the Syrian Golan occupied and annexed by Israel belongs to his country “for eternity”the day after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “Today, everyone understands the crucial importance of our presence on the Golan, and not at the foot of the Golan”declared Benjamin Netanyahu during a press conference in Jerusalem.

The very presence “temporary” Israeli troops in Syria in the buffer zone on the edge of the part of the Golan Heights occupied and annexed by Israel constitute “a violation” ofe the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria, reacted the UN spokesperson.

“The Golan [qui surplombe les collines de Galilée et le lac de Tibériade dans le nord d’Israël] will be part of the State of Israel for eternity.”he added. Israel conquered part of this mountainous plateau from Syria in 1967, repelled a Syrian attack aimed at recovering it during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, before annexing it in 1981.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that he had ordered the army to “take control” of this buffer zone after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A measure “limited and temporary taken for security reasons”assured his Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Monday.

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) can “confirm that Israeli armed forces have entered the zone of separation, have moved within the area and remain present in at least three locations”detailed UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, specifying that Israel had warned the Blue Helmets of the entry of its troops in a manner “temporary”.
