Atletico Madrid 4-3 Sevilla: Antoine Griezmann strikes late winner in La Liga thriller

Antoine Griezmann scored twice as Atletico Madrid came from behind to earn a dramatic victory against Sevilla.

Atletico trailed 3-1 with an hour played at Riyadh Air Metropolitano, but they reined in the deficit and Griezmann’s fierce stoppage-time strike completed an incredible turnaround.

Rodrigo de Paul put Atletico ahead early on with a fizzing shot, but Sevilla levelled two minutes later when slick footwork took Dodi Lukebakio away from Julian Alavarez before he drilled in at the near post.

Isaac Romero rounded off a swift counter-attack to put Sevilla in front, powering a shot through the hands of goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Sevilla then appeared to take a huge leap towards a first away league win against Atletico since 2008 when Juanlu Sanchez pounced at the far post in the 57th minute after slick build-up and a cross from the left.

Yet Diego Simeone’s home side refused to fold and Griezmann lashed in a low finish to reduce the deficit.

With time in short supply, Simeone turned to his bench and was rewarded by his decision to call on Lino.

The Brazilian collected the ball in space and emphatically found the bottom left corner from 30 yards to level the match.

Griezmann grabbed the winner in scintillating fashion, rolling a defender with his back to goal and hooking the ball into the roof of the net.

Atletico remain third but have moved to just three points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and they also boast a game in hand.

Sevilla’s inconsistent season continues as they sit 14th with just five victories from 16 outings.
