Mbappé the ghost | De Bruyne carries City to victory

Mbappé misses again

Kylian Mbappé’s era at Real Madrid is still not a love affair. Ten goals and two assists in 20 games for the Royals are certainly impressive, but somehow everyone in and around the Spanish capital expected even more from one of the currently biggest stars in world football. The 25-year-old doesn’t seem to really warm up to his teammates or the Real fans. In addition, he is sometimes very unhappy on the field. In yesterday’s defeat against Athletic Bilbao (1:2), the Frenchman missed a penalty, as he did in the Champions League against Liverpool FC (0:2). “Still doesn’t meet the requirements”headlines ‘Marca’ about the new star striker and writes: “Another crucial mistake. As at Anfield, Mbappé could have changed the course of the game from eleven meters. […] He just has no bite.”

The ‘Sport’ sees in Mbappé “a ghost wandering around the penalty spot” and questions the attacker’s playing skills: “So many dribbles end in nothing that it’s hard to believe it’s all just a symptom of poor decision-making.” The ‘L’Équipe’ presents under the title “The Bad Basque Night” a frightening statistic: “In the first half, Mbappé only had 18 touches of the ball. Only the opposing goalkeeper had fewer (13).” Coach Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed with the team’s overall performance after the final whistle, but defended his star player: “I don’t have to judge a player’s game because of a penalty, sometimes you score and sometimes you miss. Mbappé is sad and disappointed, but we have to move on.”

The aura of De Bruyne

Manchester City has experienced its biggest crisis under coach Pep Guardiola in recent weeks. The English series champion waited seven competitive games for a win and lost six times. In the league game against Nottingham Forest, the Skyblues managed to turn things around. In the 3-0 win, one man in particular was particularly convincing, as he seems to have finally overcome his persistent injury: “Kevin de Bruyne started for the first time since September 18th and revived a City team that had been winless for a long time”lobt die ‘Sports World’.

The French ‘L’Équipe’ is also full of praise: “The Citizens were buoyed by the big return of Kevin De Bruyne to the starting XI after recovering from his groin injury. The Belgian immediately took charge and played a decisive role in the opening goal when he converted a cross from Ilkay Gündogan.” The now 33-year-old had previously prepared Bernardo Silva’s opening goal. “De Bruyne turns back the years to run the show and stop City’s decline. The Belgian radiated an aura throughout the evening that made him invincible.”enthuses the Manchester Evening News.
