Harsh verdict for Evenepoel after crash during training: bruised lungs and dislocated collarbone on top of 3 fractures
A false note long before the new season starts. Remco Evenepoel fell during training. The Olympic champion (24) collided with the swinging open door of a Bpost car and was immediately taken to hospital. The harsh verdict: bruises to both lungs, a luxation of the collarbone and three fractures.
Remco Evenepoel was training when he was involved in an accident. This happened in Oetingen, in the province of Flemish Brabant.
Evenepoel collided with a Bpost car at Kerkplein. He probably crashed into a door that was swinging open, resulting in a heavy blow – which broke the frame.
“After an incident during training, Remco Evenepoel was taken to hospital today, where it turned out that he suffered fractures to his rib, right shoulder blade and right hand,” the team said in an initial statement.
Evenepoel was then transferred to another hospital (in Herentals), where his known doctors examined him again.
And although team manager Patrick Lefevere briefly raised hopes by stating that it would only be a luxation (dislocation, ed.) of the collarbone, a new update from the team contradicted him.
“Examinations have also shown contusions to both lungs and a luxation of the collarbone,” it said. These injuries are in addition to the three previously identified fractures.
“The collarbone will be operated on this evening, which – if the operation is successful – should allow Remco to leave hospital tomorrow. A two-week immobilization period will then be required, after which a plan can be made for his return to training ” it continued.
