800 police officers, closed perimeters… XXL security revealed

A few days before the start of the Festival of Lights in Lyon, the plan to ensure security during the 2024 edition was revealed.

Mobilized workforce, security perimetersspecific plans… Here is everything you need to know.

750 police officers

According to the Rhône prefecture, 550 national police officers and gendarmes, several sections of
soldiers from Operation Sentinel, 220 municipal police officers and 430 private security agents will be involved in this 2024 Festival of Lights.

The Rhône firefighters will also be very mobilized during the festival, since the Departmental-Metropolitan Emergency Fire Service (SDMIS) will mobilize more than
120 firefighters on the ground, in six remote fire stations. Teams from mobile emergency and resuscitation structures (SMUR) will also be deployed, accompanied by Red Cross first aiders who will have to manage 14 first aid stations.

Anti-terrorism plan

The Festival of Lights is taking place this year while is always on emergency attack alertstate services remind us.

Thus, a Civil Security Response Organization (ORSEC) plan is put in place “in order to coordinate the response in the event of a major event”. Two command centers bringing together the services of the State and the City of Lyon, and all their partners, will be activated during the 4 days.

Security perimeters

Like every year, security perimeters will be established around the main spaces hosting works. With the Presqu'île, Blandan Park and Tête d'Or Park will also be in areas secured by access points.

In total, 40 filter points are planned at the entrance to the areas, with potential bag searches, while 48 exits will be available to the hundreds of thousands of spectators expected each evening.

Around fifty points will be equipped with anti-ram devices.

Ces perimeters made completely pedestrian will be set up every evening from 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In these areas, it is strictly forbidden to drive a car, motorcycle, scooter, bicycle or scooter. Please note, entering and exiting public or private car parks is also prohibited. Vehicles parked inside the perimeters will not be able to leave them during closing hours.
