At the beginning of November it was already reported that Jaap Knip, as a volunteer at the Bultpark, has designated a number of locations throughout the city – at the request of the municipality of Lelystad – where a Tiny Forest could possibly be created. Such a Tiny Forest could also be created in the Bultpark.
Mini forest
Jaap Knip has taken up the plan to promote the construction of mini forests. The Bultpark Committee Foundation has taken up this idea and converted it into a plan (including the design and plant species).
A contribution has also been requested from a number of organizations that have already promised some things, such as the IVN Lelystad department, the municipality of Lelystad and the Bultpark Committee Foundation itself.
First bunch
The costs are lower than nationally estimated if you carry out the work yourself. The first mini forest (approximately 200 m2) has now been constructed, with the groundwork completed on November 15. After this the trees were planted.
As previously mentioned, a sheep fence will be placed around the mini forest. A small toad pool lies against the bush, which is of course not only intended for toads. More than 20 native trees and shrubs have been planted in the grove.
Everything was done with the volunteers of the Bultpark, with the intention that the mini forest functions as an example project. This example can be used by a company that wants to become greener, for which the forest can be seen in practice. In addition, the grove is also intended for insects and birds, which in turn promotes biodiversity.
Tiny Forest
A mini forest is also often called a Tiny Forest, which is a dense, native forest the size of a tennis court. Its construction makes it a pleasant place for butterflies, birds, bees and small mammals, but certainly also for people.
In addition, the mini forest can be used by schools, where children learn about Dutch nature in an outdoor classroom. Such a mini forest can also function as a healthy and pleasant place for local residents.
The concept of Tiny Forest comes from Indian engineer Shubhendu Sharma – who is CEO of Afforestt – who based his idea on the forestry method of Japanese tree expert Akira Miyawaki.
In the 1970s, Dr. Miyawaki developed a method to restore natural, native forests. He has created 1,700 forests, almost 100 percent of which have developed into a resilient ecosystem within 10 years.
