A Festival of Lights under heavy police surveillance due to the “emergency attack” plan

The Festival of Lights, which takes place this year from December 5 to 8, will be placed under close surveillance. Police forces, gendarmerie and security agents will be mobilized during the four days of celebration, “in order to guarantee the security and protection of the population”.

In a joint press release, the city of and the Prefecture detailed the security measures that will be put in place for the Festival of Lights. For four days, from December 5 to 8, the authorities recommend “strongly favor public transport or walking”.

Access to the premises will be controlled by gendarmes, police officers and private security agents.

“Due to the fact that France is still on “emergency attack” alert, anti-terrorism measures are planned”indicates the press release.

In order to guarantee the security and protection of the population of this major cultural event, on a daily basis: 550 national police officers and gendarmes, 220 municipal police officers and 430 private security agents will be involved in the Festival of Lights.

Still within this framework, an ORSEC plan “specific” was put in place. Two command centers will be activated during the four days of the festival.

The various access points to the festivities will be equipped with “anti-ram devices and agents will be responsible for screening the public through visual inspection, carrying out security pat-downs, possible identity checks and inspection of bags and luggage”, it is further clarified.

In order to provide medical aid, nearly 120 firefighters will be mobilized and “reinforced by SMUR teams”.

The Festival of Lights in Lyon brings together several million people in the streets of Lyon each year.
