A large number of rescuers will also be mobilized, with more than 120 firefighters as well as rescuers from the Red Cross.
While the first tests were carried out this weekend for the 2024 Lyon Festival of Lights which will take place from December 5 to 8, the security system is already well established. Several million visitors are expected in Lyon this weekend for the occasion.
The Rhône prefecture indicates in a press release that 550 national police officers and gendarmes, as well as 220 municipal police officers, will be mobilized every day for the duration of the event.
At the same time, 430 private security agents will be hired, and anti-terrorism measures will be planned, “because France is still on 'emergency attack' alert.”
More than 120 firefighters mobilized
Part of the Lyon peninsula will be made pedestrian for the occasion. The prefecture specifies that around fifty points will be set up on the perimeter, “equipped with anti-ram devices”. Agents will be distributed at the entrances, responsible for security and possibly identity checks.
On the emergency side, more than 120 firefighters and six barracks will be mobilized, reinforced by Smur teams. Red Cross first aiders will also be distributed across 14 first aid stations.
State services, with the city of Lyon and their partners, have planned two command centers during the four days of the event.
Restricted circulation
In terms of traffic, the perimeter established for the Festival of Lights will be entirely pedestrian, prohibited to cars, bicycles, and scooters. The closure of this perimeter will begin at 6 p.m. on December 5, 6 and 7, and at 5 p.m. on December 8.
