Charles Leclerc took an unexpected second place at the Qatar Grand Prix, after a difficult race in the shadow of Max Verstappen, George Russell and the McLaren F1 drivers. The Ferrari resident took advantage of the setbacks of some and the difficulties of others to sign a good result which allows the Scuderia to keep its hopes of a title.
“I'm really happy, honestly I would have signed directly to get this result after such a weekend. Especially since the circuit is not ideal for our car, we had a difficult weekend compared to McLaren but we managed to take points from them, so we will fight in Abu Dhabi” Leclerc said.
Asked if he hesitated to change his tires after the punctures of Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, he explains that he was cautious on the track but wanted to keep his tires: “I don’t know if it was the debris or the way you have to ride on the curbs.”
“But I ignored it because I had a lot of performance and I was hoping not to have a puncture, I drove to the left on the straight hoping it wouldn't hit me. It's a shame for Carlos because it would have been nice if he was also on the podium.”
Leclerc is not sure he will be able to claim victory in Abu Dhabi, but he does not despair of going for the constructors' title: “It's difficult, we're all very close. But it's exciting, there are 21 points, it's still a lot. But anything is possible and we're going to give everything.”
