The bet is already announced as a winner for The Walt Disney Company. While Vaiana 2 was initially planned to be a TV series intended for Disney+, the project transformed into a feature film had a dazzling launch in theaters.
In France, the film attracted 456,273 spectators on its first day, marking the best cinematic start of the year. Predictions in the United States are also panicking, with estimates between $135 and $145 million over the first Thanksgiving weekend, which would make it an all-time record – for comparison, the defending champion Frozen 2 (2019) made $125 million at the US box office over Thanksgiving weekend.
These economic considerations, as well as the end of Vaiana 2 necessarily ask: could there be a Vaiana 3 ? Be careful, the rest of the article reveals the end of the second film.
After breaking the curse of the god Nalo by bringing up the forgotten island of Motufetu from the depths of the sea, Moana and Maui manage to bring together the peoples of the Pacific, and seem to have reached the end of their sentence after a fierce battle with high risks.
Only, the post-credits scene of Vaiana 2 opens the door to a sequel: we see, in fact, Nalo himself on a throne, announcing that “this has only just begun”. This meaningful sentence could thus tease a third part of the adventures of the Pacific heroine while several avenues are possible.
Demigod, curse and myths
Throughout its course, Vaiana 2 lays the foundations for a possible sequel, starting with the mysterious character of Matangi. Presented as the main antagonist of the film, she is in reality a prisoner of Nalo, and asks Moana to free her from the spell by breaking the God's curse.
Little exploited in this second chapter, her role could well become more complex in a hypothetical sequel, since Matangi is also present in the post-credits scene of the film.

Curses and divinities are in the spotlight in Vaiana 2and if Nalo seems to be the threat of the moment, other gods could be introduced, expanding the mythology of Vaiana. As such, the conclusion of the film poses some questions: during the fight against Nalo, Maui seems to lose his powers for a moment (before regaining them), while his tattoos disappear from his entire body (then return).
Conversely, Moana gains a first tattoo, showing her victory and uses her emblematic oar for a short time in the same way that Maui uses his fish hook. Her relationship with the ocean and her ability to see her ancestors also leaves room for doubt: what if Moana became a half-goddess in her turn?
That being said, Disney has, for the moment, not confirmed the existence of a third film, but the company's recent announcements show that they have no hesitation in returning to their hugely successful franchise. Zootopia 2, Frozen 3 et Frozen 4 are, in fact, planned, while on the Pixar side, The Incredibles 3 is in production as well as Toy Story 5. Vice-Versa 2 could also have a sequel, having become the biggest success of all time for an animated film at the international box office. Unless Vaiana 2 won't take the title in a while?
