The festivities are underway! On Wednesday, November 27, the unmissable Strasbourg Christmas market opened its doors around the majestic 31-meter fir tree. The kick-off of a month of festivity placed under the sign of “time to marvel”, with an emphasis on tales and stories, resonating with the World Book Capital event, a UNESCO label awarded to the Alsatian capital for 2024.
A slightly shorter period than usual, but on which the millions of tourists, French and foreign, in search of the magic of the end-of-year celebrations will concentrate. Everyone will come to find decorations for the tree, gift ideas or even mulled wine and pretzels in a warm and family atmosphere – in the middle of a compact crowd (3.3 million visitors last year).

The reinforced security aspect
Six years after the terrible attack which left Strasbourg and its market in mourning, this edition will, once again, be placed under the sign of security. The system has been adapted to the latest public safety recommendations, including one-way pedestrian traffic on weekends. For the duration of the market, access to the cathedral, a major tourist attraction, will only be via the south facade to better distribute the flow of visitors. And in the event of very high traffic – which will be monitored in real time by the police, supported by drones – additional measures may be taken such as the closure of pedestrian bridges or the establishment of a single direction of traffic in certain streets.
