In 2022, the British magazine “Sight and Sound” caused astonishment by putting at the top of its list of the hundred greatest films in the history of cinema “Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles” (1975, broadcast on Arte Wednesday at 8:55 p.m.), by Chantal Akerman, dethroning “Citizen Kane”, by Orson Welles, and “8 ½”, by Fellini. This radical choice of a feature film little known outside of European cinema was wrongly explained as linked to the #MeToo movement. It was supposed to compensate for the low place given to women filmmakers in the famous ranking. The reason was simpler: “Jeanne Dielman…” is perhaps not the greatest film in the history of cinema but it is undoubtedly one of the best and most daring.
Akerman cuts in real time and in fixed shots, for more than three hours, the activity of a woman (Delphine Seyrig), mainly in her household chores. She thus makes us feel, without the slightest speech, the unbearable weight of domestic life, until the automaton goes haywire.
